What makes cottonwood so hard on gutters?
Cottonwood does two things no other Omaha tree does at once. In late spring and early June it releases cottony seed by the drift, light fluff that floats, clings, and packs down into any small opening it lands in. All year it also sheds fine twigs and leaf litter. The fluff is the real problem for gutter protection, because it is small, sticky when damp, and arrives in enormous volume over a couple of weeks.
Do mesh gutter guards work with cottonwood?
Micro-mesh and screen guards filter water through small openings while debris stays on top. That works until the openings blind over. Cottonwood fluff, along with shingle grit and pollen, is exactly the fine material that mats into a mesh and seals it. Once a screen blinds, water can sheet over the top instead of draining through, which defeats the purpose. This is why cottonwood is the debris we hear the most complaints about from mesh owners.
Why does a solid hood handle cottonwood differently?

When is cottonwood worst in the Omaha metro?
The heavy fluff runs for roughly two to three weeks in late May and June, depending on the year and the trees near your home. Homes closest to mature cottonwoods see the most, which in this metro often means lots near the rivers and creeks: the Platte valley around Gretna, the Missouri bluffs and bottoms around Blair, and the older neighborhoods with big grown-in trees.
