A clogged gutter is one that can no longer carry water to the downspout. In Omaha it is usually leaves, maple helicopters, cottonwood fluff or pine needles packed into the trough, and the first sign is water pouring over the front edge in a storm.

Signs your gutters are clogged
- Water spills over the front edge when it rains, instead of coming out of the downspout.
- A downspout barely runs, or not at all, in a steady rain.
- Plants or seedlings are growing out of the gutter.
- The gutter sags or pulls away from the house between its hangers.
- Stains, streaks or peeling paint on the siding right below the gutter.
- Wet soil, a trench or washed-out mulch along the foundation under the gutter.
- Birds, wasps or rodents nesting in it.
What clogs gutters in Omaha
Something different each season. Maple helicopters and cottonwood fluff in late spring. Oak, maple and ash leaves in the fall, with acorns under oaks. Needles all year from pines and cedars. And shingle grit, which washes off every roof and settles in the bottom of the trough, where it binds the rest into a mat.
Why it matters
Water that goes over the edge lands right beside the foundation, which is the last place water should sit, and it runs down the siding and soaks the fascia board behind the gutter. A gutter packed with wet debris is also heavy, which is how hangers pull loose. In winter, a packed gutter holds water that freezes in place.
How to clear a clogged gutter
- Use a stable ladder on firm, level ground, with someone footing it. Never lean out past the rails.
- Scoop the debris out by hand or with a gutter scoop, working toward you, and bag it rather than dropping it in the beds.
- Flush the gutter with a hose, starting at the far end from the downspout, and watch that the water runs out.
- If the downspout is blocked, run the hose up it from the bottom, or take off the lowest elbow and clear it.
- Check the hangers while you are up there; a sagging stretch holds water even when it is clean.
How to keep it from coming back
Either clean on a schedule (at least spring and fall, more under big trees), or cover the gutter so the debris never gets in. Covers differ: screens and mesh can clog in their own holes, and a solid cover sheds debris off its edge. Our guide to gutter covers sorts them by how they work.
Questions people ask next
How often should gutters be cleaned in Omaha?
At least twice a year: once in late spring after the seeds and fluff come down, and once in late fall after the leaves. Under big oaks, maples or cottonwoods, more often.
Can clogged gutters cause water in the basement?
They can contribute to it. Water that pours over a clogged gutter lands against the foundation instead of going out through the downspout, and water sitting against a foundation is one of the ways it reaches a basement.
My gutters are clean. Why do they still overflow?
A clear gutter can still overflow under a roof valley, below a steep or metal roof, or where an upper downspout empties onto a lower roof. See why gutters overflow in heavy rain.
Do gutter guards stop clogs?
It depends on the kind. Screens and mesh keep leaves out but can clog in their own openings. LeaFree is a solid cover built so leaves and seeds go off its edge instead of into the gutter.
