Why do mature Millard neighborhoods clog so fast?
A grown-in Millard street is usually pin oak, silver and Norway maple, hackberry, and, until recently, a lot of ash. That mix drops something in every season: maple helicopters in spring, cottonwood drift from the older lots in June, oak tassels and acorns, then the big leaf fall. The emerald ash borer has thinned many of the ash trees, and the dead limbs and debris that come with a declining tree make the problem worse, not better, while they stand. Under that much canopy an open gutter fills in a single autumn. A solid hood keeps the trough clear so water, not leaf litter, is what runs through it.
Millard rooflines tend to be practical: ranches, split-levels, and two-stories without a lot of drama, which usually makes for a clean one-day install. My Millard maples and oaks bury the gutters every fall. Does a solid hood really shed that?
Yes. Leaves, helicopters, and acorns have no way to stick to a smooth aluminum hood: they slide off or dry out and blow away, while surface tension pulls the water around the nose-forward edge and into the gutter. There is no mesh for the fine grit to blind, which is the failure mode in a heavy-canopy neighborhood.
We lost an ash tree to borers and the others drop constantly. Still worth it?
A declining or recently removed tree actually makes the case stronger, because it sheds extra debris while it stands and the remaining canopy still fills your gutters. LeaFree keeps that debris out of the trough so you are not on a ladder cleaning up after it.
My gutters are original to a 1980s house. Do they need replacing first?
Usually not. We inspect them, re-secure or repair any sagging or leaking sections, and install the hood over sound gutters. Full replacement is only needed if a run is truly past repair, unlike one-piece systems that replace everything by design.
