Ralston, Nebraska

Old-Ralston trees drop a lot on old-Ralston roofs.

Ralston is a small city entirely surrounded by Omaha, an older mid-century enclave about a 22-minute drive from the Elkhorn plant. Its homes were mostly built in the 1950s through the 70s, which means the trees planted with them are now very large, and very productive, over compact lots.

LeaFree® is about a 22-minute drive from the plant.

Why do older Ralston gutters overflow so fast?

A mature Ralston block is shaded by full-grown silver maple, cottonwood, and mixed hardwoods that have had sixty years or more to reach over the roof. Big old silver maples drop enormous quantities of seed helicopters in spring, cottonwoods add summer fluff, and the fall leaf drop off trees this size is heavy and lands right on the eave. On the smaller lots and older, sometimes narrower gutters common here, that debris load overflows an open gutter quickly. A solid hood sheds it so the aging gutter underneath can keep draining.

Ralston homes often still have their original gutters, so we start by checking them: re-securing sagging runs and repairing leaking seams before the hood goes on. Because our crews are roofers first, older roofs with worn shingles get handled with care. The LeaFree hood installs over sound gutters and screws only to the lip, never into a decades-old roof deck or fascia, so nothing about the install stresses an older home.

Ralston gutter questions

My mid-century Ralston home has huge old maples. Will a solid hood keep up with that leaf load?

Yes. Big mature maples are a heavy-debris case, and that is where a solid hood earns its keep: helicopters and leaves slide off instead of collecting, and there is no mesh to blind with the fine seed and grit. Water still wraps the nose-forward edge and drains, rated to 12 inches of rain per hour.

The gutters on my older Ralston house have seen better days. Do they need to go first?

We inspect them first. Sagging or leaking sections get re-secured or repaired, and then the hood installs over sound gutters. We only recommend replacing a run that is genuinely past repair, rather than replacing the whole system by default.
